Chapter Fifteen

Mark sets a tray of mugs on the coffee table with a rattle. “You will not bloody believe this. Another two women have been pulled from the Alder.” He hoists his jeans up. Skinny git. “Flick the news on Claire. I need to see what’s going on.”

“Oh my God.” She tucks her hair behind one ear and reaches for the remote. “You’re joking me, right? Two? Are they…?”

“Cheers bro.” I reach forwards for my coffee, then settle back on the sofa to enjoy the after-effects of my handiwork. The national news is still on, then we have to sit through the weather and a round of adverts.

By the time the local news begins, the anticipation’s killing me. The river Alder is the first item. I’ve always loved it when it’s the top headline.

I recognise the reporter, huddled under an umbrella. The scene behind her looks to have been cordoned off exactly like it was a week ago. I’m glad it’s not me on patrol this time. That was a long evening.

More cameras and emergency vehicles are around this time. I guess there would be with two of them being dead. But only one tent is visible – the other one, as I very well know, will probably be along the west bank of the river. This does, of course, depend on where Lucy washed up.

We bring you the early report of the discovery of the bodies of two women, thought to be twenty-nine-year-old Lucy Wilkins and twenty-eight-year-old Carly Sherwood. Formal identification has yet to be made, but their families have been informed.

Both women were seen leaving the Yorkshire Arms by the main entrance separately in the early hours of this morning. Lucy is believed to have left the pub alone on foot at 1:10 am. However, she has been captured on CCTV, walking near to a hooded male, of medium build and approximately six feet tall. Police are working to reproduce images in relation to this person of interest and ask that if he is watching, that he comes forward to be eliminated from this inquiry.

Carly Sherwood had booked a taxi, but CCTV shows her walking alone in the opposite direction to the main road. Both women were reported missing by their families yesterday.

It is too early to say whether these latest deaths add to the accidental death toll on this stretch of river, or whether this will become a murder inquiry. We will bring you more on this story as we get it.
